Pensioner, 82, accidentally locked in loo for four days knits a scarf and eats mints

Gladys Phillips went to use the public convenience in Felixstowe  which was not yet open to the public

Plucky pensioner: Gladys says she was wrapped up warm, and used the hand dryer if she gold cold.

Gladys was found by painters coming to finish the conveniences, according to the Suffolk Gazette .

A pensioner who was trapped in a locked public toilet block for four days has revealed how she used the time to knit a scarf for one of her grandchildren.
And the 82-year-old says she staved off hunger pangs with some mint imperials she found in her handbag.

Gladys Phillips was shopping in Felixstowe when she went to a new public toilet near the town's Hamilton Road.
Unfortunately, the toilet was not yet open for use, and when she made her way inside, the hi-tech door locked tight.

Gladys displayed some good old-fashioned British stoicism about her ordeal .
"I was not really concerned at first when I couldn’t get out, I was just relieved I’d managed to go to the loo!"
Her bangs and shouts remained unanswered, so she says she settled down and began knitting with a ball of pink wool she's picked up at the shops.

The widow, who lives alone and has no home phone, had also popped into the sweet shop after collecting her pension, so she had a full bag of mint imperials to eat which, she says, "kept my spirits up no end".

"“The loo was very clean and cosy. I was able to sleep on my big overcoat and was lovely and warm, and if I got cold I just sat under the hand dryer for a while."

Even so, “It was a great relief when the nice builder turned up and opened the door. He got quite a shock, I can tell you."

She says her daughter, who lives in Bury St Edmunds, has asked her to get a mobile phone.
